If you are looking to find work in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the following five tips to find a job in Cape Town could benefit you and your career.

Finding employment anywhere can be daunting, especially if you are starting over in a new area or if you are just starting out your career. Without a valid qualification in the field you are interested in and some work experience, you could have some trouble finding the right work. It is likely that you may have to do some hard work in a less than perfect position to get your foot in the door.

Preparing yourself for your dream job

The first step to finding a job anywhere is having the right qualifications. If you have been lucky enough to have your parents or guardians put you through a tertiary education or the training course of your choice then you have had a good start. If you have not yet studied, it is never too late.

Look into the industry you are interested in, ask for advice from people who are involved in it and look into training courses to qualify yourself. If financing your studies is a problem there are many financial aid programmes available. You could apply for a bursary or scholarship, or you could get a student loan to help pay your way.

Another option is to study part time while you work. Even if you are not working in the field you are interested in just yet, you are taking a step in the right direction. There are some businesses where they are willing to take in interested and hard working job seekers on internships. Other companies will pay your fees for further study, as long as you pass and spend a certain amount of time after you qualify working for them. There are a myriad of ways to make your dreams come true, you just have to put in the work and anything is possible.

Cape Town is a great city in which to live and work

Five steps to finding employment

One: a clear and concise curriculum vitae

Before you begin applying for jobs, make sure that your CV is perfect. Most employers do not want to see a CV that is longer than two pages, and many would be happier with a one page document. Take the time to work out what is really important. Ask yourself, what are the first five things you would want any employer to know about you? Make sure that your spelling, grammar and sentence structure is correct, and make sure that the font is easy to read and big enough.

A good suggestion is to put together two CVs; one that is one page long and another that is about three pages long with ALL your information included. In your cover letter (which should also be clear, to the point and grammatically correct) you can mention that you have attached a brief CV but that you have a longer, more informative one should the employer be interested. Make sure that you have a few solid referees that you can rely on as well.

Two: apply EVERYWHERE

In the age of communication there are job advertisements everywhere. There are specialised websites and newspapers advertising jobs, classifieds with job pages, magazines with advertisements, posters up outside shops and company websites with advertisements too. Look EVERYWHERE and apply for everything that might be suitable. If an employer asks for four years experience when you only have two, apply anyway because they might be willing to compromise. Remember to tailor each application to the company you are applying to.

Three: prepare for your interview

If you are lucky enough to get called in for an interview, you should prepare well before hand. It is necessary to brush up on all skills that you might be tested on, practice answers to common interview questions, dress appropriately and maintain calm. Researching the company you are interviewing with is also essential. Make sure you know what the position entails, the name and position of the person you are meeting and where you are meeting them. Do not be late.

Four: deal with disappointment

Most potential employees get rejected several times before landing their first job. You must be able to handle the disappointment of a rejection so that you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. Try to learn from every situation by asking the company what their reasons were and if they are something you can address and fix, then do so. It can only help you in the long run.

Five: never give up!

You must not give up no matter how difficult it may seem. Anyone who has ever gotten anywhere in their lives will tell you that tenacity pays off.

If you are having trouble in your search to find au pair jobs and vacancies in CT, take a moment to read the following tips.

Cape Town is a beautiful city with many great opportunities. There is a thriving business environment within and surrounding the town, and a very full and busy industrial business area outside of town. There are also many families who are in need of au pairs and house hold assistants and if you use the right avenues, there is no reason you should not find the right job for you.

Whatever job you are looking for, from au pairing to just about anything else, there is likely to be a vacancy somewhere in Cape Town. Unfortunately, there are fewer opening in some fields than in others and there are often other candidates vying for the same position. However, putting yourself out there, doing thorough job searches, having a good, succinct CV and making yourself as marketable as possible will ensure your success.

Au pair positions

There are many families in need of an au pair, but finding them can be difficult.

Register yourself with an agency

The first thing to do is to look online in the classifieds or ask around for an au pair agency. Going through an agency will give you a much better chance of finding the right job as agencies will try to match au pairs and families together as best as possible. It is always safer to go through an agency, as they will screen families to make sure you are safe before taking them on as clients.

Look online

While you wait for the agency to find a position that suits you, there is nothing wrong with looking at vacancies yourself. Using online classifieds, job columns and websites like Jobs.co.za will give you a good chance of finding the perfect position. You could also put a ‘looking for’ or ‘wanted’ advert online for prospective employers to find you. Many websites allow you to do this for free.

Look in newspapers

Print classifieds and newspapers often have vacancies sections. Look at as many as possible. Again, you could put an advertisement offering your service in one of your local publications.

Market yourself

Marketing yourself through pamphlets, business cards and advertisements could help you find employers. Putting up adverts at schools, in complexes, playgrounds, local restaurants, malls and wherever else you see a notice board will definitely make sure than any prospective employers will hear about you.

Speak to people

Word of mouth is an often under-utilised marketing tool. Many people admit to hearing about something, like the good food at their local Chinese restaurant, via word of mouth. Speak to as many people as possible, stop women with prams in the shopping malls if you have to, and you might be surprised at the response. Talking to staff at the local schools and other child care facilities is another good way to get your name out there. Cape Town is actually a very small community and people do talk about what they hear and see.

Make yourself hireable

While you look for an au pair vacancy, you could gain some experience by baby sitting family or friends’ children. Even if you do it for free you will still have a reference and something more to add to your CV at the end of the day. Many employers prefer an au pair who has done some child care courses. There are many courses available, from emergency medical care to dealing with sibling rivalry, and finishing any will make an employer look twice at your CV.

Look for temporary and full time jobs on Gumtree and you are likely to come across something suitable sooner or later. As more and more people use this free online classifieds, there are a greater number of job listings for you to choose from.

What is Gumtree?

Apart from being a Koala’s favourite food, Gumtree is also an extensive network of free classifieds and community websites found online. Gumtree now covers over 60 cities in countries such as Poland, Ireland, the UK, South Africa, and New Zealand. Gumtree once featured as one of the UK’s top 20 websites and is the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Gumtree was founded by Simon Crookall and Michael Pennington in March 2000. It was designed to be a community and classified site for London to help movers and city newcomers to get started with employment, accommodation, and meeting new people in the area. Kijiji, the internal classified group for eBay, acquired Gumtree is May 2005.

To start looking for a temporary or fulltime job on Gumtree in South Africa, simply visit www.gumtree.co.za. Choose the relevant category (Jobs) and other search criteria. One of the best parts about suing Gumtree is that you can modify your search by including search criteria such a location, job type (temporary, fulltime, part time etc), and field (media, financial services, etc).

Once you have selected the relevant search categories (as board or as narrow as you like), you can then hit the search button. The ads will appear in order of date, with the most recent ad at the top of the list. To change you search criteria at any time, you can modify the results using the filters on the left hand side of the page. Current filters include the specific category, location, distance, ad type and price.

I see a suitable job!

If you find temporary and full time jobs on Gum tree you are interested in, the next step is to contact the person who posted the ad with the information they need. If they haven’t provided contact details in the ad itself, you can reply to the employer by entering your email address and a message in the box on the right had side that says “Contact poster by email”.

If you want to add any attached documents, such as a CV or qualification, these can be attached to your email using the “Add attachment” button. Before you send the email off, you will also need to enter a verification code that is there to prevent SPAM replies. If you can’t see the number clearly, use the “Listen to the code” link below the code box. All done! Now you can hold thumbs for a reply on your own email address.

Tips for staying safe

As with many online classifieds (especially free ones) there are scammers and predators out there trying to take advantage of unsuspecting people. Keep your wits about you and remain vigilant so that you don’t become a victim. Use your common sense when applying for jobs – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.

Before replying to an ad or taking up a position, do your research and find out as much as you can about the company from independent sources. If you are en employer looking to employ someone, follow up on an applicant’s references.

Arrange a face to face meeting with employees/employers

No job should require you to submit your banking details in the application process. You should only provide these details once you have started working for the company.

Be wary of work from home opportunities. Because these kind of jobs don’t necessitate a face to face meeting, scammers often try con people out of their money by making them pay for “training” before they start the job. Remember, at no times should you pay for anything when applying for a job – you are the employee, they should be paying you!

Not many people enjoy visiting the dentist, but it is a service that we can’t do without. Dentists examine the teeth and mouth tissue of their patients to diagnose and treat any problems that person has. Most dentists act as general practitioners, but dentists can also specialize into different fields.

Specialists in the dental field are:

Orthodontists: straighten teeth

Maxillofacial and oral surgeons: operate on the jaws and mouth

Prosthodontists: replace missing teeth with crowns, bridges, etc.

Periodontists: treat children

Endodontists: specialise in root canal therapy

Oral pathologists: study oral diseases

Public health dentists: help communities to improve their dental health

Maxillofacial and oral radiologists: Diagnose diseases in the head and neck using imaging technologies

Dental jobs are not limited to those relating to the actual doctor, as dental practices require a number of other staff members. Other dental careers include dental hygienists, dental assistants, as well as receptionists in dentist offices.

The specialist is the most qualified is the dentistry career. Dental assistants may or may not be required to be qualified for the position, depending on the employer.

People who would like to take up a career in dentistry can choose from five different options, each with different educational and licensing requirements. Each position also carried different responsibilities and duties:

Specialist dentists: dentists who choose one specific area of dentistry as the focus of their career

Dentist: The general practitioner who will diagnose and treat problems found in a patient’s mouth tissue and teeth.

Dental Hygienist: This practitioner works under the supervision of the dentist. The hygienist provides patients with preventative dental advice. Dental hygienists need to have studies towards the profession.

Dental Assistant: The dental assistant works directly alongside the dentist. The assistant does perform patient care but not to the same extent as the dental hygienist. Dental assistants need not always have a dental education background and can be trained on the job. Experience is the most important factor in becoming a dental assistant.

Dental technician: A dental technician is tasked with manufacturing the prosthetics required by dentists, also known as dental laboratory technicians. Dental technicians can be trained on the job but many employers prefer to hire people who have received some kind of formal training.

Dental work is certainly not limited to dentist alone, and dental practices require a number of staff members to keep the practice running efficiently.

Many dentists are self-employed, running their own dental practices in the area of their choice.

Typical tasks carried out by a general practitioner dentist on a day to day basis include:

Filling cavities

Removing decay from teeth

Extracting teeth

Examining x-rays

Applying sealants to teeth

Administering anaesthetics

Prescribing medication

Treating gum disease by doing surgical procedures on gum and the supporting bones.

Straightening teeth

Taking teeth impressions to make the models used to make dentures.

Replacing missing teeth

Current dental positions listed in Cape Town:

A full time dental assistant position in Stellenbosch. The position calls preferably for registered dental assistant, but is also open to those who are willing to learn. The applicant should reside in the Stellenbosch region.

A dental practice in Cape Town’s southern suburbs requires a qualified dental assistant with experience in the field.

A busy practice in Pinelands in Cape Town needs an experienced, registered and qualified dental nurse with exact knowledge of the dental program.

A dental admin assistant

A dental receptionist to manage appointments and deal with customers and payments.

A dental therapist or dental hygienist.

A dentist to go between two practices.

How do I find dental jobs in CT?

As with any other employment opportunity, there are a number of resources and classifieds that list dental positions available in Cape Town. Consult the local newspaper, or try looking online. Simply use a search engine and type in “Dental jobs in CT” and you will be rewarded with a number of online job listings that will help you find the right job for your qualifications.

All over the world there is a shortage of skilled medical professionals, and South Africa is no different. Nurses will always be demand; and a registered nurse is likely to always have a have a job unless she herself chooses not to work. This makes nursing a wise career choice, particularly in today’s shady job market and economic instability.

South Africa’s largest private group of hospitals, Netcare, has invested close to R95 million to train nurses and other healthcare personnel as a result of the shortage of nurses in the industry. The Netcare Education Division has campuses in 5 major centres: Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.

Nurses today have the opportunity to specialise and further their training and skills and nurses who are highly qualified will be paid accordingly. They can also develop their careers into more educational or management roles. Nurses who provide excellent service can also be rewarded with other incentives and benefits.

It takes four years of training to become a registered nurse, but three other training levels are available in South Africa:

A one year first level course for Nursing Assistants or Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary staff. These trained nurses are responsible for general duties such as bathing patients, bedside care, feeding patients and other activities of daily living. They also assist doctors and senior nurses with their duties.

The two year course, the second nursing level, produces Enrolled Nurses or Staff Nurses. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, enrolled nurses can work under any department, including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The third level is the four-year courses that gives graduates the status of Sister or Professional Nurse. These nurses are qualified to be Registered Nurses and have specialised skills in community health, as midwives and in general nursing. Registered Nurses can opt to specialise in disciplines such as theatre, intensive care, trauma, paediatrics or orthopaedics.

With not enough of these graduates, there is great demand for nurse to fill nursing jobs in CT and around South Africa. To find a nursing job, you can simply look online at positions listed on job websites or look in the local newspaper. You can also contact hospitals and clinic directly to see if they are in need of additional staff.

Some recent job listings include:

A registered nursing assistant (this would be a job for a graduate of the one-year, first level nursing course).

An operations manager for a Nursing Department. This is a more administrative role in which nursing training is not a requirement, but may be advantageous.

A nursing educator. This position would be open to an enrolled or registered nurse who has studied for at least two years at nursing school at second level position.

An occupational health nursing practitioner

A Director of nursing for a hospital. This candidate must have a Master’s Degree in General Nursing.

A registered nursing sister (third year level)

A nursing auxiliary for an ICU department

A clinical nursing practitioner with experience in child care

These are just a few of the many jobs that are available to trained nurses. As you can see, jobs are available for all levels of study and are not limited to nursing itself, but include other disciplines such as management and education. Remember, nursing jobs are not limited to females and the number of registered mal nurses is growing slowly.

Nursing is not an easy profession and requires special empathy and care. The job can be demanding and unpredictable, but it can also be very rewarding to know that you have made a difference in bettering someone’s life.

Looking to make some extra cash while you’re on holiday? There are many types of jobs for SA students in the holidays to make extra money and prevent vacation boredom. Students are often reliant on their parents for money, meaning that incoming funds are limited. Being able to earn your own money during the holidays means extra holiday spending money and extra holiday fun! Here are some ideas to get you off the couch and into the money:

Dabble in some retail therapy

Yes, having a holiday job does mean you will have more money to throw around in the mall, but have you considered working there. Holidays are usually busy times in town as people shop for Christmas presents and holiday fare, so look around local stores for any “help wanted” signs. You can often get a cashier job without any experience and if you work at a shop you like you may even be lucky enough to get discount off their goods.

Santa’s little helper

During the December holidays there seems to be a Santa around every corner, but have you ever considered being the guy behind the beard? There are all kinds of seasonal dress-up positions available for parties and picture-taking, so harness your inner elf, reindeer, or fairy and gear up to get some extra money in the bank.

Waiter, please!

The holiday season means more dinner parties and more diners so consider getting a job in the catering industry as a waiter, waitress, or barman for a restaurant or catering company. Look online for catering companies in your area and ask restaurants if they need any extra holiday help.

Pocketing far and wide

If you have some capital to beg or borrow to get you there, consider working in Canada or the United States as a temporary seasonal worker. Ski resorts are particularly busy over this time, and often hire foreigners as extra help for ski season jobs. Although this is an expensive option, the exchange rate means that if you work hard, you can cover your costs and may even come home with some extra cash in your pocket. For more information, try agents who deal with work/travel programmes such as Camp Councillors USA (CCUSA), Chilli Adventures, or STA Travel.

Promotions

If you have the gift of the gab and have an outgoing personality, promotions are the jobs for you. Lots of businesses use promotion companies to sell their products in stores and at special events, clubs and other venues. Promotions can be days or only a few hours long and are often good money for the work you have to do.

Mom n Pops

Sometimes you don’t even have to venture very far to get some cash in hand. Ask your parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends and neighbours if they need any off jobs done such as babysitting, lawn mowing, or any other services they are willing to pay you for.

Exploit your skills

Make money off what you’re good at! If you’re good at drawing, maybe you can hang around the beach front or other popular areas and charge for caricatures and portraits of holiday-makers to give them something special to remember their holiday by; if you’re deft on the decks, ask at local clubs and events companies if they need an extra DJ; and if you’re the crafty kind, try making and selling Christmas cards.

If you are looking for holiday work, the best advice is to stay observant and opportunistic. Look out for job opportunities on signboards around you, in local newspapers or on online classifieds such as Gumtree Jobs.

These are just a few of the many of jobs for SA students in the holidays. With some imagination, determination, and a dose of hard work you can take your holiday from drab to fab with a holiday job to keep the good times rolling!

Careers in archeology are not for the feint hearted. This job requires a passion for history and cultures from the past. So if you have a curious mind are interested in why people today are the way they are and want to investigate how cultures evolved over the years, then this is the job for you. Archaeologists study the remains of civilisations passed in order to understand behaviours, laws, and customs of a particular society. If I have now sparked your interest in this type of job and you are wondering what you have to study in order to become an archaeologist, then it is simple; the majority of Universities in the country offer degrees majoring in Archaeology. However, becoming an archaeologist does not only require you to study archaeology, other scholars such as anthropologists can be involved in archaeology as they will help decipher the findings of the evidence collected.

If you are now interested in archaeology or a career in the field and are wondering exactly what it entails well after studying at university, you are generally required to do an internship that can either involve you going on an archaeological dig or staying at a lab and analyzing the finds from a dig. Once you have completed an internship, you will have to find a job at either a research institute or more commonly a museum. One common misconception is that archaeologists work in ancient ruins, above sea level. This however is not true as some archaeological sites can be found under water in shipwrecks. There are also a number of governmental institutions or entities that offer jobs in archaeology such as archaeology lecturing positions.

Watch this short video clip on “An Introduction to Archaeology”:

In Southern Africa one of the common placement for archaeologists is at heritage agencies. Most countries in Southern Africa have dedicated national and provincial heritage agencies that act as custodians of the national heritage estates. This means that you can be involved in preserving, protecting, and managing conservation sites and national heritage sites both locally and internationally. Archaeologists who work at museums fulfil a number of roles such as research or CRM projects in the local area on the museums behalf. In addition to this, they have to ensure that any archaeological finding that is stored in the museum is kept in the perfect conditions to preserve it. Many archaeologists additionally provide research papers that can be used by other archaeologists across the world as reference when doing their own research. Should you be an archaeologist already and are wondering if there is room for you to freelance, then the answer is yes. Many archaeologist freelance on specific jobs, especially if the finds at one site turn out to be larger than expected.

According to the Association of Southern African Professional Archaeologists they claim that in order to be an archaeologist, you need to have the following:

Needs to be committed to conservation,

Patient

Detail oriented

Observant

Curious

And sensitive.

In order to be a successful archaeologist, your aim is to study and preserve where possible, that which is important in providing us with a window in to our past. You need to be extremely patient as the chances that you will interpret something that you find correctly the first time around is seldom the case as the more you uncover, the more analysis and interpretation needs to take place. Archaeologists also need to be sensitive to societal issues and understand the communities in which they work by taking nothing for granted.
